The brief you get is never the brief you need. Here's how we find the real one before anyone opens a design tool.
Where the real brief lives
Every brief says what the client wants. Almost none say what the client is afraid of. The second one is the brief that matters, and it rarely shows up in the document. It shows up in the pause before someone answers, in the slide they skip, in the question they ask twice.
We spend the first week of every engagement listening for that. Not to be clever, but because a brand built on the stated goal and not the real fear tends to look right and land wrong.
How we listen
Three conversations, never more than five people in each, and the same question asked three different ways. By the third version the answer changes. That's the brief.
It sounds slow. It saves weeks.
