About Oxy

Oxy is a creative design agency with offices in Phoenix and Salt Lake. We use our superpowers to create customer and business value through intuitive product designs and brand experiences. The bulk of our work is done for emerging startups and tech-enabled enterprises without strategic design support. Our work has been seen/used by millions of people across the world. Our focus as an agency is on strategy and production design for product experiences, messaging and brand identity. Clients love working with us because we’re relentless in our focus on helping define and achieve outcomes that help move their businesses and visions forward.

The role

We're looking for a Creative Director who can lead a range of design initiatives from start to finish. This person would play a pivotal role in guiding design projects from inception, to final hand-off and launch. As a Creative Director, your role is to ensure the solution maps back to the problem and that the plan and execution of that plan is as seamless as possible. For a better perspective of this role, see the sections titled 'about you', 'key tasks', ‘what success looks like’, and 'key requirements' below.

About you

  • You're not an asshole (See below for the official definition of ‘asshole’).
  • You would quit any job that forced you to work with assholes.
  • You're brutally honest and you don't let bullshit slide. Your honesty can make people feel uncomfortable, which is not the same as being an asshole.
  • Your default position is to assume others have good intentions and good will, and you expect the same in return.
  • You see yourself as a human first, employee second (or not at all).
  • You take pride in what you produce. i.e. Cutting corners makes you feel uneasy.
  • You value managers who empower you to take the time to do things right, or support you to have the time to figure out what it means to do things right.
  • You try to think in first-principles, and often question how something can be made better - a process, an output, a presentation, etc.
  • You're willing to let Oxy be your primary mental focus from a career perspective, and give it priority over other opportunities, interests and hobbies.
  • You are looking for ‘second family.’ (See below for the official definition of ‘second family’).
  • Also, you have an interest in becoming a better designer & design leader.

Key tasks

  • Meet with prospective clients and describe the value of design, Oxy's offerings, and what makes us different from the many options they have to choose from.
  • Collect and synthesize high-level product requirements from clients to shape a concrete scope of work.
  • Collaborate with business development in defining client needs & mapping client needs to make-sense solutions we can provide.
  • Present solution options to clients via proposals and presentations.
  • Lead strategy direction and guide the end-to-end creative/design process for each project.
  • Collect design requirements and translate those requirements into actionable tasks for you or another designer to perform.
  • Assist designers in asset production of designs across product design and website design. More specifically; product requirements, user stories, user flows, user research, wireframes, visual languages, component libraries, high-fidelity designs, user testing, content workshops, copywriting, visual concepts, etc.
  • Perform/run internal reviews with designers and partners to go over client work and various milestones.
  • Perform/run external design reviews with clients and present work that you have done, as well as work done by fellow designers on the team.
  • Collect & validate feedback from clients in a diplomatic way.
  • Push back when clients ask for things that are unrealistic (timeline/resources) or would ultimately be counterproductive/corrosive to their business goals/needs/users.
  • Collaborate with engineering and development teams in communicating the requirements/flows/outputs of a design deliverable.

What success looks like

  • You partner well with Sales in answering questions from prospective clients about Oxy, design in general, and how we could help clients achieve their intended outcomes.
  • You synthesize client meeting notes into actionable potential solutions.
  • When new projects begin, you can be relied upon to create a timeline/roadmap and ‘put a team together’ based on our team’s availability.
  • You ensure projects stay ‘on track’ and deadlines are met.
  • You support, check in with and unblock designers during projects.
  • You organize and lead internal reviews with designers, offering advice, answering questions, and ensure designs are ‘the best they can be.’
  • You advocate and ‘go to bat’ for everyone during a project, including: the client, the client’s users, your team members, yourself. Yes, that’s everyone.

Key requirements

  • Interested in learning how to manage/mentor other designers and become more of a strategic thinker.
  • 3-5 years working as a holistic designer, with work samples that include experience with design strategy, user experience design and visual design.
  • Bachelor's degree (field does not matter) or equivalent experience in the field. Possess great attention to detail.

  • Low ego, collaborative, and open minded.
  • (Plus) Experience managing other designers.
